I can still remember the days of my childhood as if it were only yesterday. Life had seemed so simple, peaceful, even - ignorance truly was bliss in those days. And now, as my life begins to draw to a close, as a rose beings to wilt and fold, I look back at those days in yearning. As the seasons changed, as I grew older, I had begun to see the truth and with that, my perspective of the world around me began to blossom and I learned to see things for what they really were. And now, because of that, I can bring you this story of truth, friendship, justice, and above all else, - as with many a story from that bygone era - love. A story that came flooding back to my mind whenever I smelled the sweet fragrance of a rose.
I could begin by telling you my life story, but that is likely to fill several volumes and I fear that by the time I draw my last breath, I shall have only written the first paragraph of the first chapter of the first volume. So it is here t
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
